Time Units: From Nanoseconds to Fortnights

Convert time across scientific, calendar, and historical cultural contexts.

Time: The Universal Constant

While humans disagree on how to measure a meter or a kilogram, the Second has been universally accepted around the world.

Scientific Timeframes

Modern science measures events in increments impossibly small for the human brain to comprehend:

  • Millisecond (ms): $10^{-3}$ seconds. The blink of an eye takes about 300 ms.
  • Microsecond (μs): $10^{-6}$ seconds. Camera flashes operate in microseconds.
  • Nanosecond (ns): $10^{-9}$ seconds. Modern CPU cycle times.
  • Planck Time: The theoretical smallest quantifiable unit of time in physics ($~5.39 \times 10^{-44}$ seconds).

Astronomical Time

  • Tropical Year: 365.24219 days—the time it takes for Earth to cycle through the seasons.
  • Sidereal Day: 23 hours, 56 minutes, 4.091 seconds—the time it takes Earth to rotate once relative to the distant stars.

Historical & Cultural

  • Fortnight: Exactly 14 days (two weeks).
  • Ke (刻): A traditional Chinese measure equal to a quarter of an hour (15 minutes).
  • Muhurta: A Hindu unit of time roughly equal to 48 minutes.
